How much wood could a...

...couple of talented guys attach to our ceiling and walls?

Quite a lot!  Here's the upstairs den ceiling.  Well, an approximation of it anyhow, courtesy of the wide-angle lens.  The windows are actually straight.

And this is looking the opposite direction at the skylights over the stairs.

The entry is looking good (except for the front door -- that's temporary).  The entry ceiling is in progress.

Some nice work on the corner.  (Thanks Tom and John!)  These guys are real perfectionists.

Meanwhile, for those who were wondering how the anemometer pole turned out (that would me), it's up!  Now some brave person just needs to dig the anemometer out of the garage and attach it.

Speaking of the garage (this is for Mark who's been bugging me about it), here's the inside.  Along with our appliances and random building materials.  This is probably pretty much how it'll keep looking after we move in.

Here's where the kayaks will hang.  That was an interesting feature to explain to our (very patient and creative) architect.

Next up are the countertops, and then the faucets and sinks.

What's Cookin?

Well, not much, because there is no stove.

But there are cabinets, so at least you can see where the stove will eventually be.  OK, so maybe it's not so obvious.  It'll be on the island, but the camera bag has to move first.

There's even a kitchen sink, though it's not attached to anything.  The refrigerator will be in the hole behind the island, the oven and microwave will be in the holes on the right, and the dishwasher will be next to the sink.

Other cabinets are in, too.  These are in the upstairs master bedroom, in the hallway across from the bathroom.  Drawers are on the bottom and shelves on the top.  The door on the end is for the closet.

This one is in the downstairs bedroom.  The wood is Doug Fir, same as the other cabinets.

Meanwhile, the tiling is almost finished.  This how the downstairs master bathroom is turning out.

And here's the downstairs half-bath with the space age triangular sink.

The upstairs guest bath with the cool dots by the vanity (we were too cheap to buy more).

The glass tiles in the upstairs master bath haven't been grouted yet -- that's next.

Speaking of next, the wood arrived for the ceiling in the entryway, over the stairs, and in the upstairs den.  Stay tuned...

More Wood

Here's how things looked on New Year's Day...

The hardwood floors are all in!  This is the upstairs master bedroom and den.  The 5" white oak boards (mix of rift-sawn and quarter-sawn for wood geeks) are both glued and nailed down.  We originally planned to orient the boards the other way, but for the (damp) coastal climate, the hardwood contractor thought it was important for the boards be nailed to the joists to avoid warping.  Now that we've seen it, we really like this orientation, so we're happy it worked out this way.  For the observant, the baseboards will be showing up soon.

In more wood news, they're working on the deck.  It's slow work, because they're using hidden fasteners.

Meanwhile, the tile guys are moving along.  Most of the tile floors are finished except for grouting.  Here how the downstairs master bath is progressing.

Next up is cabinets.  All the bathroom vanities are in, and the kitchen cabinets are arriving on Thursday.

Painted Ends

The finish wood for the windows arrived.

What a Christmas-y look.  No that's not snow.  I wonder what those colors mean?

The first occupant has moved in.  Not much luck on the fly hunting so far.

Tom is making really good progress on the trim.  Here's what the living room windows look like so far.

The tiling is moving ahead.  Here's the shower wall in the downstairs master bathroom.  They're doing a great job of working with the tile variation.  If you're trying to figure out what color the grout is, so are we (it's not in yet).  We think it'll be white with this tile.

The guest bath is a little more straightforward, and is looking really good.

All the bathroom vanities are in.  This is the upstairs master bath (like I said last entry, it's not nearly as big as it looks here, it's just a really wide angle lens).  The floor tiles are also all in, but you can't see them, because they're under that protective cover.

Meanwhile, there's a pile of decking laying outside, so we may have a deck soon.  The hardwood floor folks will be showing up on Thursday.  They'll lay the floor, and then let it acclimate for around 30 days before sanding and finishing it.  And, tiling will continue for a while yet.  As always, stay tuned...

Snowed Under

Snow on the beach!  How often does that happen?

It gave us an excuse to go for a walk and see how the house was progressing from that angle.

And from another angle.  This could go on and on.  The snow was so cool, though.

Meanwhile, on the inside, the drywall is finished and the house is starting to look real.  Here's the living room.

And the attic.  Not bad for an attic, eh?

The tile guys are getting started.  Here's the downstairs bathroom.

And the upstairs bathroom.  It's not really that big, that's just the wonder of wide angle photography.  Notice the shape of the round pail.

A lot is happening now.  The tile squad is moving ahead, the cabinet guy is going to put in the bathroom vanities, and the floor folks will soon start laying the hardwood.  What a crowd!  Stay tuned...

Caution

The cement is all in!  It's not dry yet, but it's too late to leave hand prints.

Here's the rest of the concrete.  The raised part on the right side of the sidewalk will be a planter.  The fence posts are all in, too.  They're all tall because we're still figuring out how high the fence will be in various places, which is complicated, because the lot has a bit of slope in various directions.

Meanwhile indoors, the drywallers are nearly finished.  Probably a day to go.

The real stairs are getting closer.  These brackets will hold the steps up we hope.  That yellow wire is for one of the step lights.

Next up is the tiling, which should start this coming week.

Padded Room

In fact, the whole house has been padded.

  

 The insulation folks stopped by...

 

They did all the interior walls, too, for noise reduction.  Same for the space between the first and second floors.  Everything looks different now that you can't see through the walls.  Now that the insulation is finished, the window trim is being installed, so the dry wall folks should be able to start this coming week.

Meanwhile, the correct garage door showed up to take the place of its temporary stand-in.  Stay tuned, more stuff should happen this coming week...
